Job Description

Created in 2019, TotalEnergies Nature Based Solutions (TENBS) team manages a portfolio of diverse operations in Africa, Latin America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific.
Its main mission is to detect, select, qualify, invest in, and manage natural carbon sinks with its partners while working on the right positioning, both internally and externally, of nature-based solutions.
TENBS designs and implements its operations following a landscape approach, in collaboration with local communities, including economic value chains aiming the sustainability of natural carbon sinks (conservation or restoration) and the achievement of optimal environmental and social benefits.
In this context, TENBS team is looking for a Technical Expert on Carbon, Forestry and Agriculture to strengthen and develop its activity.

As a member of the Technical Expertise team, your main missions will be to:
Participate in the construction of the Business Unit strategic vision

  • Ensure permanent and structured technical and regulatory monitoring of the NBS market
  • Contribute to the team selection process of priority operations to build a balanced portfolio of activities to achieve the carbon credits production objectives
  • Ensure that deliverables are consistent with TENBS strategy.
  • Conduct the technical studies required for TENBS projects and operations: carbon, forestry, agriculture, compensation

  • Lead technical development studies (prospect, preliminary/feasibility, conceptual or pre-project) on behalf of business development
  • Prepare study specifications (study content, deliverables, schedule and budget)
  • Coordinate activities and contributions of the various external service providers during the execution of the study
  • Define and lead the comparative analyses needed to determine optimal solutions – in terms of technical feasibility, economic value, co-benefits and alignment with project objectives – and synthesize architecture and design recommendations for the natural carbon sink, to estimate the likelihood of producing carbon credits in quality and quantity, as well as the associated risks and uncertainties
  • Identify and promote any alternative – technical or otherwise – to maximize value creation, contributes to the implementation of technical/social/environmental innovations and improvement of the carbon performance of the asset, economic sustainability of the agriculture/forestry value chains associated with the carbon sink, maximization of environmental and social benefits. You will take into account the quality requirements of the entire project, integrating the execution and operational aspects
  • Work closely with the CSR team in the development of technical itineraries.
  • Support subsidiaries in the development studies that they carry out locally, assists and advises them in the corporate exercises
  • Within the framework of the activities initiated by the business development, participate in data-rooms and due diligence and any other formality contributing to gather information.
  • Participate in production process of carbon credits for The Company

  • Participate in supervision of validation and verification audits: contracting and managing the Certifying Bodies and Developers (PDD, Monitoring Report), suprvize audits and carbon credit productions
  • Participates in the development of tools and processes for « Monitoring Reporting Verification » (MRV) of signed operations.
  • Actively contributes to the team’s activity and its growth in knowledge and skills

  • Business intelligence around the following topics: international and sectoral climate negotiations, carbon markets, methodological and technological innovation, competitive benchmark, forestry and agricultural technical itineraries, and any other field related to NBS through research, active network and external conferences and events related to the sector.
  • Contributes to the spread of know-how and feedback.
  • Represents the Company when it’s necessary (technical committees, conferences, seminars).

    Context and environment

    Purpose:

    • Design optimized technical itineraries (conservation, forestry, agriculture, local value chain) to produce carbon credits and the expected social and environmental co-benefits of finalized operations. The Technical expert will consider the available resources, the international and national context of climate negotiations, the available standards and methodologies, the internal/external benchmark for the considered carbon well, the contributions of new technologies, the respect of the Company’s requirement standards in terms of safety and environment, while ensuring their acceptability by all stakeholders
    • Contribute to providing management with reliable technical files, considering the associated risks, to support the investment decision-making process.
    • Support « Operation » team in the implementation and operational follow-up of finalized projects.

     

    Candidate profile

  • PhD/Master’s degree/Engineering degree in the field of environment, forestry, agriculture, conservation, sustainable development, international policy on climate change
  • Technical knowledge and field experience in the implementation and management of forest and/or agricultural carbon projects will be appreciated
  • Understanding and knowledge of the voluntary carbon market, carbon certification standards and methodology and co-benefits, as well as international frameworks (UNFCCC, FCPF…) and major international agreements (Paris Agreements, Kyoto Protocol…)
  • A network and reputation in these fields are an asset
  • Fluent English, Spanish or Portuguese or other regional language is a plus
